DescriptionThis service focuses on maintaining clean, healthy environments and providing information and programs to ensure that people in the community have safe food, clean water and protection from disease * services provided by public health inspectors include promoting safe ways to handle food at home and in community settings * ensuring restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals, institutions, and other food services prepare and serve food safely * providing information on how to prevent food poisoning and the spread of communicable disease such as rabies * monitoring test results of public drinking and recreational water supplies and providing information and advice on how to protect them from contamination; responding to reports of health hazards * animal bite investigation * processing of special occasion permits for public events where food is prepared and served * the Health Unit is also actively involved with health and emergency service personnel across the county in emergency response planning 
 
* the Health Unit is the point of contact for inquiries about preventing and managing bed bugs * more information about bed bugs is available at www.bedbuginfo.ca 
 
Low-cost rabies clinics may be offered by veterinarians in Simcoe County each fall * information on locations, times and dates is usually available from the Health Unit by mid September * at other times, people must contact their own vet, or they can try the Ontario SPCA's animal clinic in Barrie at 705-734-9882 
 
Water bottles can be picked up at local health unit offices for well water testing * the Health Unit does not do testing of individual water supplies which are on a municipal water supply, but does offer information on water quality in general and works with municipalities on water quality issues 
 
Each spring the Health Unit undertakes a West Nile virus program including public education on personal protection and mosquito control, and surveillance of WNv in mosquitoes and humans
